DOJ Secretary Raul Gonzalez

Far from being a lovable grumpy old man, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez has ceased to be funny. Not that his crass comments ever were. In this photo, could this guy whispering to his ear be the source of Sec. Gonzalez’s constant stream of nasty and pompous remarks? Does he feed those insensitive comments or will Gonzalez claim that they are solely his own?

The devil is known to take on many forms. Looking at the two, who can tell?

I hope this other old man (with all due respect), Amando Doronila is proven right when he says in his article today, Gonzalez’s gaffe may cost him his job, that the DOJ Secretary’s time to go is near. Mag dilang anghel sana siya.

More columns on this old man: “Both feet in mouth” from Howie Severino’s Sidetrip, “Mad Justice” from Rebel without a Clue and yesterday’s Inquirer editorial, “Bane“. Amando Doronila still has more to say on the matter in his “Caught in a trap of his own making“. I sincerely hope it’s just a matter of time before we are rid of this guy.

Earth Day came and went, and I wonder how much difference the events and festivities really made on most people. The Lung Center of the Philippines together with the DENR organized what seemed to be a flurry of interesting activities topped by a free concert, a poster-making contest, free testing of vehicle emissions, alternative fuels demo, an exhibit on the effects of air pollution and the regular Sunday or Sidcor Market (Read Mike Tan’s Pinoy Kasi article on this or see pics by dalanghita.com).

earth day at lung center phils. As soon as we arrived, i knew it was going to be a let down. Unlike what i expected, the place wasn’t bustling with activity. There was no long cue of vehicles for the free emissions-test. No kids busy painting away their entries or if it was finished, posters displayed for judging. Even the market seemed to be missing it’s usual patrons. At this point though, i have to admit that we did arrive rather late- just before noon. So maybe, it was just me. After we were done buying our produce, we went over to where the concert was being held. Unfortunately the concert didn’t seem to gather much of a crowd, and the booths in the area featured the usual tiangge stuff – with one booth selling bio-fuel. The artist on stage, after finishing a James Taylor song apologized to the crowd- he wasn’t used to waking so early on a Sunday (it was past noon), he said, but since it was Earth Day, “Yeah! Earth Day!” he shouts to the crowd. I guess that’s it. We took our cue and headed home.

Interesting trivia though: for an Earth Day event, the organizers- in this case the DENR, no less – didn’t even provide separate trash receptacles for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

this morning i got a text message from my sister who was taking an exam (why she is allowed to use her cellphone during an exam deserves a completely new post in the future). she asked for an example of a computer’s operating system and a non-operating system. ever the non-techie, and unsure of my answer, i passed on the question to Curly-top. the not-so-surprising wisecrack i got as a reply, “Windows is an operating system, and a non-operating system.”

Touché, Bill Gates would utter somewhere.

Windows users lament all the time about being plagued by bugs and viruses but still stick to it anyway as if there are no alternatives. unfortunately i am not referring to Mac (although i wish i were, from personal experience). Linux and other Unix-based systems have consistently been generating rave reviews, where security is concerned, mostly. and the fact that it is free, most of the time.

i came across this article, Why a Unix-based system from digg, which lists not a few advantages from such systems. unfortunately though, it also sites a few reasons why it is still not an option for most Windows users. one, is if you are a hardcore gamer (which i am not). and two, is if you are part of the printing industry (which i am). for the former, most popular games are still made for the Microsoft system only. and for the latter, the writer simply puts it this way, “The graphics-to-print technology has methods such as CMYK and Pantone color matching which are heavily patented, the patents are licensed only to Adobe, and Adobe isn’t porting Photoshop anywhere near a GNU system. That’s that.”

as for my cheating sister, who was spared from the wisecrack and failed to get any assistance or an accomplice, got her answers when her test results arrived.

i have missed all appointed dates for fresh starts and new beginnings – the new year, the Chinese new year, and just recently, Easter. but heck, the sun rises everyday, so it is never too late to start over. not even for this blog that has not seen activity for almost seven months now.

with the first quarter of the year over and done with (no looking back), i have finally come upon a resolution: to just write. write inane, write stupid, write profound, write short, write long. (the sesame street “singgg, sing a songgg. make it simple to last your whole life longggg..” comes to mind)

it’s going to be a good year.
